Makeup Brushes – Apply your Makeup like a Pro

Woman holding Makeup Brushes to her Face

The trick to having makeup that looks like it is done professionally is through the use of professional tools. Quality makeup brushes will significantly improve your overall look when applying makeup. Therefore, owning and learning how to use makeup brushes is essential. Not only do they ensure a flawless application but they also provide precision while accentuating the right areas of your face. Good quality brushes get the job done quickly, therefore you don’t have to spend hours to get your makeup on.

There is a huge variety of different professional and not so professional makeup brushes available on the market and the cost varies as well. In my expert opinion, a decent brush costs anywhere from $15 and up… that could mean as high as $90 per brush (all depends on how the brush is made and the branded name such as MAC or Stila) You don’t need such expensive brushes, unless you are a Professional Makeup Artist, otherwise you just need to familiarize yourself with middle grade basic 6 key brushes that will do the job. Buying a set is always more value for the dollar, since you’re not paying for each brush individually and most likely they will come in a case of some sort.

Here I have chosen an inexpensive, yet good quality Arbonne Makeup Brush Set made with soft, synthetic nylon fibers and natural reclaimed wood handles dyed with water-based pigment. This set is great for your daily use 100% vegan and cruelty-free. Easily cleaned with gentle soap. It should last you up to 2 years if looked after properly. Brushes come in a logo-branded cotton canvas case with a pocket to store makeup extras.

Arbonne Cosmetics Brush Set – 6 ct available for Only ($47)

Arbonne Makeup Brush Set#1 Powder Brush: Billowy, soft, and fully dense brush allows you to apply powder with control, creating an airbrushed finish. #2 Cheek Brush: Slant tip for ease and control of cheek contouring; medium, soft density allows for a natural cheek color application and prevents over-application. #3 Liquid Foundation/Flat Brush: Great for liquid foundations and concealer for proper blending; features a rounded head to match the natural contours of the face such as the corners under the eyes. #4 All Over Eye Shadow Brush: Perfect length, size and density for eye shadow application and blending. #5 Shading Brush: Shorter head provides maximum control for effortless creasing or shading. #6 Slant Brush: Used to fill in brows or line eyes with wet shadow.

To start with we have the flat synthetic brush for makeup primer followed by liquid foundation/concealer, perfect for blending and spreading foundation evenly for flawless coverage.

The large and fluffy powder brush is used for buffering powder into the face in order to set the liquid or cream foundation. The application of powder helps give a matte look to the face as it absorbs oil and sweat. It also sweeps a light brush of powder across the face, giving you a more natural look as opposed to using a sponge or a powder puff.

Having some colors on your cheeks can give you that radiant and bright look, some women generally overuse blush which does not look natural nor appealing. In order to avoid this disaster, it would be wise to invest in a blush brush. Just like the powder brush, this one is fluffy too but it is smaller in size as it is meant just for the cheeks area. It can also multi-task as a bronzer brush and/or contouring brush.

Another highly important makeup brush to have is the eyeshadow brush. Personally I always like to have a smaller and a bigger one as I always use 2 shades of eye shadow (you never want to use one and the same brush for 2 different colors) This is a small brush with tightly packed bristles that helps pack on eyeshadows on the eyelid, for crease and brow bone area I would invest in a slightly fluffier eyeshadow brush in order to blend the eyeshadows and give it a softer look since it gets rid of the harsh lines. An eyeshadow blending brush is a must for smokey-eye lovers.

Last but not least, you also need a slanted angled brow brush for filling in between the hairs with eyeshadow or brow powder for that clean, sharp brow look.

Another great Brush Kit with a lightly higher quality (hence the price is a bit more steep) with 6 more essential brushes for someone who has mastered a more detailed look and creative technique of personal makeup application would be one of Sigmas Best Seller Beauty Essential Kit sold by This is the kind of set that I use for my own personal home makeup care. I never use the same set as I would for my clients, (I keep my PRO set which I will mention later, always clean and ready to go in case a job comes up) Also very easy to clean but will last you longer… about 3-5 years if looked after correctly. I love this set because the brush bristles don’t bother my sensitive skin which goes itchy and red if use a cheaper brand unfortunately. Exclusive SigmaTech® Fibers, Cruelty Free, Allergy Free.

Now on the other hand, if you do happen to be looking for a large variety of Professional Makeup Brushes to get creative with, the type that Pro Artists use (as they never know what kind of work they will be doing and the kind of effects they will be creating) for more than just a basic daily look. An artist’s job is to in most cases create a dramatic look for runway, stage or TV performance on more than just one person. Therefore, our basic brush kit here is simply not going to cut it. Now we are going PRO with different sizes and shapes of brush, bristle fibers and density for a complete transformation. This is also a great kit for personal use if you know what each brush is meant for. We have 28 Professional Quality Brushes in this set made with different fibers depending on its purpose. Beauty Pro Series 28 pc Brush Set in Master Case Black is designed for dramatic HD makeup applications. Brushes that can create an Airbrush effect, high pigmentation and an even application for strong smokey-eye effect. Brushes that create precise lining across the upper and lower lash lines. Great for use with gel, cream or powder liners. This is a set I would recommend to a Pro Artist, not so much for an average person who just needs the basics.

Beauty Pro Series Makeup Brush Set

I am not going to go into more detail of the 28 brushes, although the kit is made up of what I already mentioned for the sets above and more. They are more comfortable to hold and angle to clients face. Easy to wrap up, carry and store. Amazing selection of brushes of all sizes. One con about this set is that it’s missing some of my favorite Kabuki Brushes which I love to use on some of my clients that have a not so perfect skin surface.

Kabuki Brushes come in handy to spread foundation even more precisely for a more flawless look (usually use them for photography shoots).  From Lamora Pro Foundation Kabuki Makeup Brush Set tools these little miracle workers are ideal for stippling, buffing, blending, contouring, highlighting, shading. Imperfections will disappear leaving an airbrushed finish. You will love it!!! VEGAN, 100% NON-POROUS, SUPER SOFT, DENSE, SILKY. Easy to clean and maintain. Fantastic for everyday use with long lasting performance that will exceed your expectations. Professional grade, hand-made with solid black GLOSSY wooden handles and UNIQUE COPPER FERRULE. Recommended for even the most problematic skin types (redness, uneven skin tones, large pores, acneic, dermatitis). Easily cover minor blemishes, spots and even acne.

They are also available for purchase separately on

Cleaning Tips for your Makeup Brushes: Personally, I take all my brushes and stick them in a bowl filled with warm/hot water with some baby soap to soak for 10 min, or you can use botanical hand soap that is gentle yet takes off grease. Important tip: Never soak your brush past its metal piece. We don’t want the wood handle to get wet (if dirty, I swipe through the handle with damp paper towel but never soak) as your brush will fall apart and break. After 10 min, dump the water out and now with your hands go through each brush bristles with same soap under running water until runs clear. Each brush than gently squeeze water out into a clean towel and leave brush laying down to dry.

  2. Wearing makeup, professionally applied, can make such a difference to your style. I have always seen sets of brushes and wondered what difference it would make which one I use. This explanation is very useful and takes into account price and the fact that some of us want to look beautiful without having to visit a pro. I appreciate the tips on application and care of the tools. I am ready to buy my set of brushes. I would love to know, in a general way, how to choose the different shades and forms (liquid, cream, powder) that I need.

    1. Hello Joy

Thank you for reading and your comments. I picked my favorites here of course.
I’m assuming your questions about “different shades and forms (liquid, cream, powder)” is about makeup products such as eye shadow, concealer and foundations. It really depends on what your skin is like and how much coverage you will need.

Liquid – is foundation is more for medium coverage, you may just have some dark spots or uneven skin tone and you want to cover it up but, still keep the look as natural as possible.
Cream – is usually a form of concealer or/and foundation, to cover up scars, uneven skin tone and even blemishes and is considered full coverage.
Powder – is for the finishing touches on top of foundation to seal the look. Or it is great for people with nearly perfect skin. Instead of using foundation you lightly apply the powder using a powder brush over your moisturized and/or primed skin. Very little coverage for a very natural look.
So like I said, it all depends on what your need and preference is.
      I hope this helps 🙂
